Give Back to Society

You do not need to be rich or famous to make a difference. Small, steady actions add up, and learning is the best gift you can share.

Six simple ways to help

Each one, teach one

Teach a skill you have, such as reading, maths, English, computers or a craft, to a neighbour, a younger child or a grandparent for just one hour a week. Children: do this with a trusted adult nearby.

Try this: Pick one skill and one person this week.

Plant and protect trees

Plant a sapling, water it, and look after it as it grows. Trees clean the air, cool our streets and give shelter to birds.

Try this: Plant one sapling with your family or class.

Digital helper

Help an elder learn to make a video call, read a message, or use a government or health service online. Be patient, and let them press the buttons. Never share passwords or one-time codes (OTPs).

Try this: Spend 20 minutes teaching one person.

Share books and stationery

Pass on books, notebooks and school supplies you no longer use to a school, library or a child who needs them.

Try this: Gather five items and hand them over.

Save water and energy

Fix leaking taps, switch off lights and fans when you leave a room, and reuse water where you safely can.

Try this: Do a quick home check for leaks and unused lights.

Be kind online

Think before you post, do not forward things you have not checked, and say something encouraging to someone today.

Try this: Send one genuine thank-you message.

Part of a bigger goal

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 4 (opens in a new tab) calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning for all. When you teach, share or encourage, you are helping to achieve it.

Looking for a local cause? Ask your school, library, temple, mosque, church or neighbourhood group how you can help. Check any organisation carefully before you donate.
